Flower-a-Day: Orange Lily

Orange Lily, 6x8,oil/panel

The color orange gets a bad rap!! Decorators won't go near it, fashion designers shun it, I've even heard of some gallery owners who won't accept a piece if it contains the color orange! Poor orange relegated to the task of traffic cone. While not my favorite color I think orange has its virtues. It looks stunning with its complement, blue, and I think of orange as a happy color exuding warmth and the cozy feelings associated with a snuggle by the fireplace on a winter's night. It's the color of fall pumpkins, tropical sunsets and juicy Florida oranges. As a painter I find it much easier to work with than yellow. When darkened orange changes into wonderful deep shades of chestnut and auburn. Unlike yellow, which when darkened turns olive green or muddy brown. So lets hear it for orange and the beautiful Asiatic lilies that so elegantly sport this maligned color. Hip Hip Hooray for orange!!
