Autumn Marsh
9x12, oil/linen panel
I love the changeable skies and atmosphere of autumn. This low lying marshy area is about a mile from my home. I've had my eye on it as a painting spot for a few weeks now. So much goes on in these marshy areas. Today the wind was pushing large brooding clouds along and creating an ever changing pattern of reflections and ripples on the water. The beech, oak and maple trees were tossed gently about as the bittewrsweet and wild grapevine held hands with their branches and trunks. Reeds and marsh grasses, so feathery and soft, were waving hello. There were wild turkeys sauntering along the roadside and bird calls in the air. Everything seemed to be in motion, one last great rustle before the stillness of winter.
October is the month
for painted leaves.
Their rich glow
now flashes around
the world.
As fruits and leaves
and the day itself
acquire a bright tint
just before they fall,
so the year near its
setting.
October is its sunset sky;
November the later
twilight.
Henry David Thoreau
